As a reminder, our Community Compass Grant is accepting applications for 2026 for eligible social enterprises and co-operatives.

Community partners in the fight for food security
East Coast Credit Union, A Better Life Foundation, and Upward Mobility Kitchens have joined forces to create the Upward Kitchen and Cafe at The Nook. This collaborative community impact project provides healthy, chef-inspired meals to community members in need through a food service window, token program, and direct delivery.
About the partnership
After proven success on the West Coast, we have partnered with A Better Life Foundation and Upward Mobility Kitchens to bring this innovative food recovery project to Halifax.
The initiative creates thoughtful, healthy, and accessible meals, incorporating food typically destined for waste through the Waste Not Want Not Initiative. It not only addresses hunger, but the issue of food waste in our communities knowing that we can feed so many more people by reevaluating our food waste habits.
Our commitment
East Coast Credit Union is providing $150,000 per year over the next five years to the program. A long-term commitment, East Coast Credit Union's support will have an annual impact of:

Hands-on support
In addition to funding this important work, we have been providing weekly volunteer support in the kitchen. Our employee volunteers have been proudly peeling potatoes and chopping carrots as an integral part of this social impact project. Being directly involved in the operation of the program has brought a deeper connection for both organizations.
