About the program
Who can apply?
The Community Compass Grant provides $150,000 in total funding for projects or programs that create a measurable social or environmental impact in our local communities. Open to social enterprises and co-operatives, our grant is designed to foster sustainable changes here at home.
Eligible businesses must:
- Be a registered business or non-profit operating a social enterprise, or be a registered co-operative
- Be registered in, or actively operating within, Nova Scotia

What is a social enterprise?
Social enterprises are businesses that generate revenue while advancing a social, cultural, or environmental purpose. They reinvest most profits back into their mission and may be structured as for-profit companies, non-profits, or co-operatives. Key characteristics of a social enterprise:
- A clear social, cultural, or environmental mission
- A revenue-generating business model
- Reinvestment of profits or surplus to maximize impact
What is a registered co-coperative?
A co-operative is an association of persons (organization) that is owned and controlled by the people to meet their common economic, social, and/or cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly owned and democratically controlled business (enterprise). To be considered under this application, your organization must be registered as a co-operative with the CRA and follow co-operative principles within your operations.
How much money could I get?
Applicants will be asked to select a level of funding in the following allotments:
- $10,000 The Explorer
- $15,000 The Discoverer
- $20,000 The Navigator
- $40,000 The Trailblazer
I am neither a social enterprise or a registered co-operative. Does this mean I can't apply?
