About the program
Who can apply?
The Community Compass Grant provides $150,000 in total funding for projects or programs that create a measurable social or environmental impact in our local communities. Open to social enterprises and co-operatives, our grant is designed to foster sustainable changes here at home.
Eligible businesses must:
- Be a registered co-operative or social enterprise
- Be registered in or operate in Nova Scotia

What is a social enterprise?
A social enterprise is a revenue-generating organization that could encompass either a charitable organization or a for-profit company. It has two goals: to achieve social, cultural, community economic, and/or environmental outcomes and to earn revenue. Operating as a business, a social enterprise manages its operations and leverages the power of the marketplace to redirect surplus funds toward these identified goals.
What is a registered co-coperative?A co-operative is an association of persons (organization) that is owned and controlled by the people to meet their common economic, social, and/or cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly owned and democratically controlled business (enterprise). To be considered under this application, your organization must be registered as a co-operative with the CRA and follow co-operative principles within your operations.
How much money could I get?Applicants will be asked to select a level of funding in the following allotments:
- $10,000 The Explorer
- $15,000 The Discoverer
- $20,000 The Navigator
- $40,000 The Trailblazer
